A MESSAGE ABOUT HATS

11th September 2017Publicity Manager

Students are reminded that although the weather has turned colder they are not  yet allowed to wear the official black woolly St Bon’s hat until we return to school after the October half term holiday.

The hats will be available to buy from school Reception after October and they cost £3. 50. We have lots in stock so don’t panic.

No other hats are suitable and students seen wearing another non-uniform hat will be told to take it off and it could be confiscated.

Parents are asked to work with us and ensure their son has the correct hat and understand this rule.

OPEN EVENING 2017

By Publicity Manager11th September 2017

All parents and carers of Year 6 boys who are interested in joining St Bonaventure’s next year (September 2018) are invited to attend our Open Evening on Thursday, October 5, 2017.

Choosing a new secondary school is a very important decision and Headteacher, Mr Halliwell, will address parents and reassure them and tell them why St Bonaventure’s is an excellent choice for their sons.

Current Year 7 students will be on hand to chat to parents about how they have found starting secondary school and to show them around.

This year at St Bonaventure’s a record number of students achieved top grades in  their A levels and GCSE examinations. We have a 100% progression rate too.

This year St Bon’s also celebrated 140 years of education in the East End and ours is a  school with a long and proud history and an impressive Alumni. We are incredibly proud of the young men that attend our great school and many Old Bonaventurians have gone on to achieve great things in the world and they stay in touch with us and return to speak to our students to inspire and motivate them.

The Open Evening kicks off at 6pm and goes through until 8.30pm. There will be an opportunity to visit classrooms and speak to teachers and see St Bon’s in action.

Parents will be able to pick up a copy of the latest prospectus on the night.

A week of Open Day Tours has been scheduled for the following week from 9 – 13 October at 9.30am for parents who can’t make the evening on the 5th.

We look forward to meeting interested boys and their parents on October 5.

6TH FORM START IN TOP FORM

By Publicity Manager6th September 2017

This morning 170 new students joined our Year 12 as fully fledged 6th Formers all keen to start their chosen courses.

They gathered in St Francis’ Hall and were welcomed into school and addressed by Headteacher, Mr Halliwell, and Director of 6th Form, Wayne Templeman.

Guest speaker, Psychology expert, Elsa Corr, spoke to the group about Growth Mindset Training and  gave them pointers on how to succeed in the 6th Form and tailor their studying to the more difficult higher exams.

The students all looked incredibly smart and ready for the new chapter in their lives.

Tomorrow, Thursday September 7, they are going on retreat to South Weald in Essex for ‘The Big Hello’ which is a ‘getting to know you’ exercise with some prayer and fun thrown in with a range of activities  on the cards for them. This is traditionally a very useful day that past students say was a real ice breaker.

Watch out for photos on Facebook and Twitter of tomorrow’s events.

One thing remains to be said at the is: “Welcome to St Bon’s.”

ZIGGY GOT BIGGY OVER THE SUMMER

By Publicity Manager4th September 2017

Wow!…it’s only 6 weeks since we last saw him but school therapy pet, Australian Labradoodle,  Ziggy, has grown really big and looks very grown up.

His metamorphasis has really shocked boys and staff at school today with many gasping at his appearance and calm demeanour.

Some things never change, though, and everyone was pleased to see him and looking forward to the start of the new academic year with their furry friend alongside them.

SUCCESSFUL FIRST DAY FOR YEAR 7 NEW STARTERS

By Publicity Manager4th September 2017

Our new Year 7 boys started as they meant to go on today, Monday, September 4, very smart, happy and keen to impress on their first day of term.

They were only in school for the morning to familiarise themselves with  the classrooms and corridors and get to know each other  without the older boys being in school.

Everything went smoothly and we look forward to seeing them all again in the morning for a full day of lessons.

ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION IS A HUGE TRIUMPH

18th July 2017Publicity Manager

Our 140th anniversary celebratory mass was a fantastic occasion yesterday, July 17,  with 13 priests and The Bishop of Brentwood con-celebrating in St Antony’s Church.

A host of alumni, former teachers, governors and headteachers and friends of St Bonaventure’s from far and wide travelled to join us at the mass.  A buffet and reception followed on the Friary lawn.

Students were treated to a free breakfast in the morning and had various sessions learning outside the classroom before mass started.

Here are some photos of the day.

HAPPY FEAST DAY ST BONAVENTURE

By Publicity Manager13th July 2017

This Saturday, July 15, is the Feast Day St Bonaventure, our Patron saint.

St Bonaventure, was born at Bagnoregio, in the Lazio region of central Italy, in 1221. His name was John but he received the name Bonaventure after St Francis of Assisi prayed for John’s recovery from a dangerous illness when he was a child and cried out: “O Buona Ventura” which means good fortune.

At the age of 22, John (now known as Bonaventure) entered the Franciscan Order. In Paris he became the close friend of St Thomas Aquinas.

At the age of 35 he was chosen General of his Order. He did much for his Order and composed ‘The Life of St. Francis’ . He also assisted at the translation of the relics of St Antony of Padua.

He was nominated Archbishop of York by Pope Clement IV, but he begged not to be forced to accept that dignity. Pope Gregory X obliged him to take upon himself a greater one, that of Cardinal and Bishop of Albano, one of the six suffragan Sees of Rome.

He died while he was assisting at the Second Council of Lyons, on July 15, 1274.

He is known as the Doctor of the Church.

St Bonaventure continue to pray for all students, staff, governors, parents and friends of our great school.
