Year 10 student Haseeb Rauf was today called in to see the Headteacher for some excellent news.

WE’VE GOT YOUR NUMBER

By Publicity Manager15th May 2019

When actor Patrick McGoohan from the TV show ‘The Prisoner’ announced: “I am not a number, I am a free man” what he didn’t realise was that numbers provide the road to freedom, freedom towards financial security, better job prospects and sound decision making that lasts a lifetime.

Here in St Bonaventure’s Mrs Imrith is excited to announce it’s National Numeracy Day and she has lots of interesting things planned for our students to get involved.

All lessons are starting with a numeracy activity, puzzles, discussion and a short video and at lunchtime activities, games and competitions will be taking place in the maths corridor.  Spot prizes, merits and encouragement to keep using numbers everyday will take place too.

Mrs Imrith went on to explain: “Attitudes towards numbers have been negative for far too long, but at St Bon’s we want to change that. We want to help make people feel confident and recognise the value and presence of numbers in everyday life. People can manage their money better and avoid debt. Everyone has a maths brain and with a little time and effort people can improve their skills and become more confident with numbers.”

SALAD DAYS

By Publicity Manager14th May 2019
Our Year 12 students did brilliantly yesterday, May 13, as they prepared fruit salad and delivering it to a mosque in Plaistow for their community action project
They invited all members of the community  both Muslim and non Muslim to come and join in Ifthar ( the breaking of fast).
Labib Islam from 12 Gregory added:  “It felt really good to deliver the fruit  and the Imam was really impressed at how we’d organised this all”.
Teacher Shahidur Rahman explained: “This builds on the work of another group who were planting flowers in West Ham Park last week and them speaking with the local community. The students are a credit to St Bonaventure’s and I hope staff congratulate them for all their hard work.”
This is all part of an initiative to raise mental health awareness.
The students are off to City Hall on Thursday, May 16,  for an awards ceremony.

PLACEMENT PERFECTION

By Publicity Manager14th May 2019
Through our partnership with The Royal Bank of Canada RBC Academy We ran a series of three careers workshops in school for our 6th Formers.
These started last Summer term when they were in Year 12 and culminated in workshop 3 this Feb which helped them apply for RBC Academy bursary internships – exclusive to the four schools taking part.
These RBC Academy internships include a £2000 per year bursary for all three years whilst at University and 21 weeks of paid work placements and mentoring during university holidays.
This year four of our Year 13s have been successful winning the RBC Academy Bursary internships and start their first round of paid work placements at RBC this summer. The students are:
Israel Owolabi
Emmanuel Ashiao
Jacob Osai-Ogbekene
Nnaemeka Ajuzie
This is a huge achievement for these students and for St Bonaventure’s to get four of the six bursaries this year in competition with three other schools is amazing.

Ajin Muringayil wants to go to Nottingham, Dalton Bally’s been offered a place at UCL and Rodolfo Abedejos and Stefan Bastianpulle have been offered places at King’s College London GKT School of Medical Education.

The would-be Doctors are studying hard for their exams currently and we wish them lots of luck.

HANSARDS DELIVERED AS KEEPSAKES

7th May 2019Publicity Manager

MP for West Ham, Lyn Brown, made a very kind gesture to those Year 10 students she met in the Houses of Parliament last week by delivering each boy with an official report from the House of Commons Parliamentary debate Hansard document from May 1, 2019.

Mr Lewis gathered the boys in the library this morning and presented them each with their own copy.

St Bonaventure’s is mentioned in the official document and some of the students were mentioned individually.

What a lovely thing to do and something the students will treasure forever.

DOUBLE JUNIOR NBA CHAMPS DOUBLE WOW!

29th April 2019Publicity Manager
Last week will go down in history in school as our fabulous young basketballers in Year 7 and Year 8 won the Junior NBA category.
Coach Onierti went on to explain:  “It was a journey that started back in September where the Year 7 and 8 basketball teams played their first Jr NBA games of the season. Both teams won their respective leagues, they then went on a successful playoff run seeing off the likes of Bishop Challoner, Oaks Park School and Chadwell Heath Academy to advance to the the final 4.
St Bons had made it to the year 7 Jr NBA finals in 4 consecutive years, managing to win 2 and come third twice. This year makes it 5 in a row and looking for our 3rd title. The first game was against St. Thomas Moore who played under the NBA franchise (Toronto Raptors), a thrilling game that was mostly dominated by St Bon’s playing as
( Indiana Pacers). St Bon’s finished the game 41-18 victory and advanced to play against Holy Trinity (Dallas Mavericks).
The final was a one sided affair with St Bon’s out classing Holy Trinity in every aspect of the game. The boys were superior in every position and went on to win 62-4. A well deserved win with a third title secured.
This year will see the Jr NBA run a year 8 competition for the first time. St Bon’s were playing under the franchise (Milwaukee Bucks)  and were looking to defend their title. The first game was against Wimbledon College (Atlanta Hawks) who entered the competition for the first time and had an impressive run to the finals. A nervy start from both teams made it a close encounter early on but the cool and calm St Bon’s team slowly crept ahead and never looked back. They defended amazingly well and sailed to victory with a 54 – 18 win. They went on to face Kingsdale School (San Antonio Spurs) who were last years semi finalists.
The final game started well for St Bon’s taking a early lead 11-6, things slowed down mid way through the first half as Kingsdale went on a 6-0 run. St Bon’s would eventually gather their strength and eventually sail to victory with yet another impressive win 45-23.
Winning one Jr NBA title was nice but winning two in a space of two days was special. Not only that, defending last year’s title is more rewarding. It has been a successful campaign, one that will go down in St Bon’s sporting history.”
We can’t argue with that.
Marc and Noah were Junior NBA Ambassadors for the games too.
