Learning French at St. Bonaventure’s RC Comprehensive school:

This is an exciting time to be studying languages at St. Bonaventure’s school. The MFL department is undergoing a transformation with the introduction of Spanish in Year 7, the possibility of studying two languages at the same time and a new ‘Fast track GCSE’.

We offer the following programmes of study in Modern Foreign Languages:
  • In year 7 pupils will be taught French, German and Spanish.
  • In Year 8 pupils will continue to take their ‘first’ language for one hour and their second language for 2 hours per week.
  • In year 9, pupils will continue to study one of the two languages with the option to choose their second language as an additional GCSE.
  • Pupils will have an opportunity to take a GCSE in their second language in Year 11. Some pupils may opt to begin an AS level course in their first language of study.
Why study French?

French is a particularly beautiful language and is becoming increasingly popular with St. Bonaventure’s boys. We have a very talented and committed group of French teachers. GCSE and A level results in French have improved significantly over the last few years.

The benefits of studying a second language are widely recognised amongst employers and universities. With a decreasing number of people able to speak a second language on leaving education- this is a skill that is increasingly sought after by employers. Employers and universities acknowledge that those pupils who have learnt a second language have a better understanding of other countries and cultures and particularly if they have been abroad, are more open and adaptable to new experiences.
