‘Books are the carriers of civilization.Without books, history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill. They are engines of change, windows on the world…’

Barbara W. Tuchman

Reading, writing, speaking and listening are the tools with which each of us learn, make sense and interact with the world around us.

During their time at St Bonaventure’s the English Department looks to provide each student with the skills and confidence to enable them to become successful communicators of the future. At Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 we have a varied and diverse curriculum that allows our students to improve their literacy skills as well as develop personal learning and thinking skills; such as working in teams, being self managers and becoming independent enquirers. We also look to share our enthusiasm for English Literature with those that we teach and actively promote reading throughout the Department.

The English team believe that our role within the school is crucial to the pupils we deal with everyday, in shaping the future that lies ahead for them. The department is dedicated to supporting all the students it teaches, and offers a wide range of out of hours classes, as well as theatre trips, visits from authors and activities such as the Carnegie Shadowing Programme.
