'I came that you may have life and have it to the full' John 10:10

As a department we aim:
  • to present Christian teaching in a way that is suited to the intellectual capacity of each pupil.
  • to lead boys in an objective and critical study of religious issues and to provide the opportunity for them to achieve the highest grades possible in their public exams.
  • to continue the boys education of other faiths and denominations in such a way that nurtures respect and understanding of their own religious background.
  • to provide an educational and learning environment that meets the needs of each individual learner, regardless of ability.
  • to assist in the religious life of the school with colleagues in other departments.

Key Stage 3

Students at key stage three study the Icons programme which implements the contents and guidance for Religious Education that is given in the Bishops’ Religious Education Curriculum Directory. The threefold process- Research, Revelation, Response – encourages students to learn from, as well as about, religion, and through investigation, study and reflection offers them understanding and insight into the religious dimensions of life. The content of programme is outlined below.

Assessment

In Icons there are two attainment targets (AT):

AT1: Knowledge and understanding of religion: learning about religion; knowledge, understanding, ability to evaluate.

AT2: Reflection on meaning: learning from religion; ability to reflect on meaning.
The tasks and assessment exercises in Icons cover both these targets. Attainment levels and level descriptors are given to each pupil at the beginning of each year to be stuck in the front of their exercise book.

When the department is not marking in Levels we use a departmental mark scheme that is also given out at the beginning of each year to be stuck in the front of the exercise book.

Resources

Icons includes three colour student’s books, one for each year at Key Stage 3. Each student is given their own copy at the beginning of the school year and is responsible for bringing it to class every lesson and for keeping it in good condition until its return in the summer term. Whilst we do not insist that each student has their own Bible it would be helpful if there were one at home to supplement homework and extension activities.
