Primary Links

The PE Dept shares a number with local primary schools through the Schools Sport Program (a Government initiative). The school employs a Schools Sport Co-ordinator (SSCO) whose responsibility is to promote sport and ensure that there is good practice within the primary Schools.

The school is currently working alongside three schools: St. Lukes, St. Joachims and St. Winefrides.

The SSCO works alongside the PE co-ordinator in each school to develop PE and Sport. This may include providing INSET for classroom teachers and assistants or setting up and organising after school clubs.

The Dept and our Junior Sports Leaders enjoy the interaction with the schools as we assist and help to organise end of year Sports days.

The program is seen as on going success, as Primary schools enjoy good quality PE and sport. Our dept benefits by pupils entering with high standards of kit and ability as well as a National Curriculum level.

KEY STAGE 3 PE

At Key stage 3 pupils Cover 4 aspects of the National Curriculum. These include: Games, Invasion (football and Basketball) Striking and Fielding (cricket and Softball) and Net and Wall Games (badminton, tennis and volleyball). Gymnastics (formal and educational), Athletics and Outdoor Education.
Students participate in two, one hour PE lessons a week and cover a different activity in each lesson. They change activities at the end of each half term to ensure students have access to a broad and balanced curriculum. At the end of each half term students are assessed according to national curriculum standards, these are then displayed on the key stage 3 notice board, giving students the opportunity to track their progress throughout the year. Students are given a Short target to help them improve immediate performance, as well as an end of key stage 3 target level ensuring that maximum progress is made.

Students are expected to participate in every lesson with their full PE ensuring the high standards set are maintained.

The PE department offers a large variety of extra-curricular activities to all students of all abilities. These include morning basketball clubs (Monday-Thursday), and a Friday morning fitness club. Inter-form competitions are run at lunch time (football and basketball, all years) as well as team practice and games after school or on Saturday Mornings.

Key Stage 4 PE
Core PE:

When students reach Key Stage 4 (KS4) core PE is restricted to one period a week. In this period students will experience a variety of activities such as swimming, football, basketball, health & fitness, badminton, athletics and softball. Students will study 5 of the 7 available activities in depth throughout the year in order to meet the KS4 curriculum requirements: evaluating and improving skills, acquiring and developing, selecting and applying and their knowledge of fitness and health. Students work on a half term rotation between activities in order to allow them continuity and progression throughout the unit. Students are expected to maintain their high standards of kit and continue to develop in the subject.

GCSE PE:

GCSE PE is now offered to students through timetabled lessons. Students complete a total of two periods a week on top of their one period of core PE. Students will undertake the GCSE course for two years before sitting their exam in the summer of Year 11. The course is made up of a practical assessment (60%) and a theory component (40%).

Junior Sports Leaders Award (JSLA):

The JSLA course is offered to students in Key Stage 4 as a vocational course in order to develop their leadership skills and organisational qualities. Students are assessed on their ability to plan, perform and evaluate on the successful running of Key Stage 3 inter-form competitions. Students are hand picked by the PE department on their potential leadership qualities as well as performing, coaching and refereeing abilities.
